The Women Behind Your Clothes — AMO's Lavender Hill Story
Every piece of clothing tells two stories. The one you wear — and the one of the hands that made it.
At Africa Made Only, we want you to know both.
Where Your Clothes Are Made
Our garments are made in Lavender Hill, on the Cape Flats of the Western Cape. This is not a factory floor in the conventional sense. It's a home-based cooperative — a dedicated production space built with purpose, where a team of skilled makers show up every day to cut, sew, and finish the pieces you order.
The majority of our makers are women — single mothers and grandmothers — who bring years of garment-making experience to every stitch. Many have been through cycles of retrenchment in South Africa's textile industry. Production Street, the cooperative we work with, was built to change that — to create stable, dignified, community-based work in a neighbourhood that needs it.
Why This Model Matters
South Africa's garment industry has faced decades of pressure from cheap imports and offshoring. Skills that took years to develop — pattern-cutting, overlocking, flatlock stitching — have been disappearing from local communities.
Our model exists to counter that. By keeping production in Lavender Hill, we keep skills alive, keep income in the community, and keep the chain of production visible and accountable. There are no hidden supply chains here. We know exactly who made your order — and so do you.
Made to Order, Made With Care
Because we produce on a made-to-order basis — with our most popular items held in stock for faster delivery — every garment gets proper attention. Our fabrics are soften- and shrink-washed before make-up, so your piece fits perfectly and holds its shape over time. There's no rush-through-the-line mentality. Each order matters because each maker's time matters.
The Hooded Rabobi is a good example of this care in action — a hoodie designed and finished entirely in Lavender Hill, built to last and worn with pride. The cooperative model also allows us to support small local clothing designers and start-up brands who need manufacturing runs of 10 to 1,000 units — a scale most large factories won't touch. AMO fills that gap: skilled hands, community wages, quality output.
A Fabric Made Here, Stitched Here
Our primary fabric — shweshwe — is produced by Da Gama Textiles in the Eastern Cape's Zwelitsha community. From the looms of the Eastern Cape to the sewing machines of Lavender Hill, every part of the AMO supply chain is African-made and accountable.
That's what we mean when we say Africa Made Only. Not just a name. A commitment.
