Cape Town’s Fashion Makers — Why Local Matters
In a world of fast fashion and invisible supply chains, knowing where your clothes come from is a radical act. At Africa Made Only, we've built our entire business around making that answer simple: Cape Town. Always Cape Town.
The Case for Local Production
South Africa has a deep garment-making heritage. But decades of cheap imports and offshoring have hollowed out local manufacturing — closing factories, displacing skilled workers, and eroding communities that once thrived on textile production.
When you buy locally made clothing, you keep money in the economy, support real jobs, and preserve skills that took years to develop. Pattern-cutting, overlocking, flatlock stitching — these are crafts, not just processes. They deserve to survive.
What "Local" Looks Like at AMO
Our garments are made in Lavender Hill, on the Cape Flats, by a team of skilled makers who are part of the Production Street cooperative. Most are women — single mothers and grandmothers — with years of garment experience and a stake in seeing this model succeed.
Our fabric tells the same story. Shweshwe is produced by Da Gama Textiles in Zwelitsha, Eastern Cape — one of South Africa's oldest vertically integrated textile manufacturers. Every thread we use has a traceable, African origin. You can see that craftsmanship in pieces like the Hooded Rabobi and the TheBok T-Shirt — both designed, cut, and finished entirely in Cape Town.
Small Runs, Big Impact
We produce runs of 10 to 1,000 units — a range that most large factories won't touch. That means small start-up clothing brands and local designers can access professional manufacturing without the minimum order quantities that would otherwise shut them out. When AMO thrives, so does a broader network of Cape Town creatives.
Corporate Partnerships That Mean Something
We've seen what this model looks like at scale through our partnership with Seattle Coffee Company, who commissioned shirts sewn by the Lavender Hill team and embroidered by Buttermilk Embroidery in Ndabeni — another locally run business. Their response said it all: "To know that our baristas are wearing shirts that have supported the local economy from start to finish is something we are super happy about."
